Mrs. Sarah Boyce – Language Arts and Middle School Team Lead

With ten years of teaching experience, Mrs. Boyce joined our middle school team as our Language Arts teacher in 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Instructional Strategist Endorsement, and is Georgia State certified, and Reading and ESOL endorsed. Mrs. Boyce was named teacher of the year for Charles Brant Chesney Elementary School and was selected as a semi-finalist for Gwinnett County Public Schools Teacher of the Year for the 2012-2013 academic year.   Mrs. Boyce is excited to teach at BCA because she will have the opportunity to help her students find who they are in Christ and discover their purpose for His kingdom. Mrs. Boyce and her family attend East Gate Church in Cumming, and her daughter, Ellyana, will be a first grader and her son Avner, will be in Pre-4.

Mrs. Guess received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Grace College in 2013. She moved to the area this summer with her husband, Quentin and is excited to teach at BCA because she will have the opportunity to influence and encourage students in their walk with Christ through a scientific lens. Mrs. Guess is coming to BCA from Granger Christian School in Indiana where she taught middle and high school science classes and coached soccer for 3 years.

 

Mr. Van Keys – Athletic Director and Middle School P.E.

Coach Keys joined the BCA staff this past summer as our Athletic Director and middle school P.E. teacher. Coach Keys received his B.A. from LaGrange College in Health/PE/Recreation and his Masters in PE from State University of West Ga. Coach Keys spent 32 years in the Fulton County School System and 27 of those years at Milton High School which happens to be his alma mater. He is married to his wonderful wife Lora and has two grown sons named Kory, who is on the basketball staff at Ole Miss, and Kody, who attends Georgia State.

Mr. David Millis – Social Studies and Dean of Students

Mr. David Millis joined our staff  as MS Social Studies teacher in 2015.  He graduated with a BS in Secondary Education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He is also state certified in Secondary Education Social Studies. Most recently, Mr. Millis worked at Keystone Jr./Sr. High School in Knox, PA, where he taught Social Studies and led an after school Homework Helpers program. A recent newlywed, Mr. Millis moved to the Atlanta area with his new bride, Adrienne. They are currently searching for a church home in their new community, and are self proclaimed “movie buffs”. Mr. Millis also enjoys sports of all kinds, kayaking, and just “hanging out with people”. While he does not currently own a pet, he is trying to convince his wife that a boxer puppy by the name of Apollo is a good idea.

Mrs. Peggy Ridley – Mathematics

Mrs. Ridley earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with an Emphasis on Secondary School Teaching from California State University East Bay. She is a member of the National Council of Mathematics Teachers, holds a Language Development Specialist Certificate, and is ACSI certified. She is also earned the Single Subject Credential Mathematics from the State of California.

Mrs. Ridley has been teaching for 15 years and has been at BCA for the past nine. She enjoys the students and fellow staff members. “The mood and activity here drew us to Bridgeway as parents of a rising 3rd grader in the spring of 2006. From her students, Mrs. Ridley has learned, “That many of them have amazing, godly character qualities at a very young age; that they are willing and eager to invites us teachers into their lives and share their lives with us (something I didn’t experience as often in public school). When she isn’t teaching, Mrs. Ridley enjoys playing piano and keyboard for Bridgeway Church, reading, jigsaw puzzles, canoeing, and kayaking with her family.

Mrs. Demetra Stephens – Technology

Mrs. Stephens earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Lamar University and a Masters of Art in Mathematics from Villanova University. She worked as a Software Test Engineer for 11 years with Lockheed Martin before relocating to Atlanta with her husband. Mrs. Stephens continued her corporate career for two additional years and then decided start a family. Mrs. Stephens has three children that attended BCA for a total of nine years. She began substitute teaching at Bridgeway in 2009 and transitioned into a teaching assistant role in 2013. Mrs. Stephens loves spending time with her family.

Mrs. Brandee Thurman – Visual Art

A native Texan, Mrs. Brandee Thurman has a passion for education and a love for the arts. She continues to further her art education through the National Art of Education Association and the Art of Education. She is the mother of three and the proud (and very young) grandmother of two. Prior to joining the Bridgeway staff, she spent eight years teaching at a local art studio.

When she’s not in the classroom or holding a paintbrush, Mrs. Thurman enjoys snow skiing, gardening, hiking, and reading. She also loves teaching Awana and Sunday school. What she enjoys most about teaching at BCA is the family atmosphere. “It is wonderful to be able to share the love of the Lord with kids and to see their spiritual growth.”

Mr. Iain Velez – Spanish and Eighth Grade Bible

Mr. Velez has been teaching Spanish at Bridgeway for 10 years. He earned a B.S. in Spanish and Business Administration from Houghton College in Houghton, NY, and is certified by the State of Georgia and ACSI. What he most enjoys about BCA is being able to use his gifts and sharing his faith freely, while making an impact for the Kingdom of God. “My students have taught me to be a better teacher, role model, and Christian example.”

Growing up in Bolivia, Mr. Velez had many different pets and animals, but now he only has one funny looking dog called Bossa. Mr. Velez played for the U17 Bolivian National soccer team and toured with a Christian rock band during college. Today, he’s just as happy as the worship leader for Bridgeway Church, and coaching both the girls and boys BCA soccer teams.

Mrs. Cathy Walker –  Arrowsmith

Mrs. Walker is beginning her 15 year teaching and her 13th year here at BCA. After taking a 2 year break to work with Special Needs students in Forsyth County, she was excited to come back to BCA in the role as a certified  Arrowsmith Cognitive Training Teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing/Finance from the University of Oklahoma. She was a Technical Recruiter for Lucent Technologies and Cisco for 9 years before joining the BCA family. Being part of BCA has been rewarding both spiritually and for her relationship and friendships with students and their families. She enjoys gardening, decorating and watching lacrosse games at Lambert cheering on her favorite #25.

Mr. Michael Watanabe – Band

Mr. Watanabe joined the BCA team through the school’s connection with Highland Day Camp in 2016.  An alumnus of the University of Georgia, Mr. Watanabe was a member of the UGA Redcoat Marching Band, as well as various concert ensembles during his time as a student.  After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 2014, he went on to intern at Camp Highland and eventually joined their full time staff as a Program Coordinator.  Since then, he has continued to participate in the music community, volunteering with middle and high school bands, teaching private lessons, and playing trumpet and percussion in the American Patriot Winds community band in Cherokee County, GA.  Mr. Watanabe has been passionate about instrumental music since middle school and is excited to be entering his first year as the Band Director at BCA.  The purpose of Camp Highland has been central to his growth as a teacher, youth mentor, and follower of Christ, and he is looking forward to joining a community that shares a mission to “develop leaders and engage the heart” by “equipping students to know, grow, and go as committed disciples of Christ and disciple-makers in the world.”
